Le marais des Bris

Harmony between man and nature!

The Marais des Bris is a 37ha site that belongs to the local authority and is classified as a Sensitive Natural Area. It’s an area of canals, reeds, meadows and bushes – a link between sea and forest.

A little Oléron paradise

Formerly a fragile coastal area, the Marais des Bris was reclaimed from the sea by man in the 19th century in order to prevent flooding. This natural site, in the past agricultural, has now become recognised for its biological wealth.

A mosaic of wetlands, both salt and fresh, shelter a remarkable population of orchids and numerous species of breeding birds (warblers…) or migrators (terns and waders). The heron and egret are privileged guests. With its setting between sea and land, the marsh ensures the purification of rainwater before it reaches the sea, a hidden but essential function for the farming of oysters and other shellfish.
